Commercial debt recovery should create engagement and payment while keeping the response proportionate to the account and relationship.
When should I refer an overdue account for debt recovery?
Referral should be considered when the agreed due date has passed and ordinary reminders are no longer producing payment, a credible proposal or progress on a genuine dispute. Broken promises, repeated avoidance, deteriorating credit information or concern about the debtor's position can make early action more important. You can assess recoverability before placing the account.
Does the debt need to consist of one invoice?
No. A commercial debt often consists of several unpaid invoices forming one overdue account. Provide the total principal balance, a current statement, the relevant invoice references and the oldest invoice due date. Credits, part-payments and disputed items should be identified so the amount pursued is clear.
What documents should I provide?
Useful evidence includes the contract or accepted terms, purchase orders, invoices, statements, proof of delivery or performance, correspondence, payment history and details of any dispute or acknowledgment. Good evidence helps Rezolva understand the account and choose the right approach.
How do I place a debt with Rezolva?
Create a free account at Rezolva Connect, enter the creditor and debtor details, add the total balance and oldest due date, and upload the supporting documents. Once the information is complete and the instruction has been reviewed, Rezolva normally aims to begin recovery activity within 24 hours. Create a Rezolva account.
What happens after an account is placed?
Rezolva reviews the information, evidence, previous contact, dispute position and recovery basis. We then begin proportionate commercial engagement by telephone, email and written correspondence, keep the client informed through Rezolva Connect and pursue payment or a credible proposal. Formal legal action is not taken without separate client authority.
Who receives payment - Rezolva or my business?
Debtors are normally instructed to pay Rezolva's client account so payments can be identified, reconciled and remitted transparently. If the debtor pays your business directly after placement, tell Rezolva immediately so the account can be reconciled and updated under the agreed terms.
How long does commercial debt recovery take?
There is no fixed timescale because every account is different. Straightforward, uncontested debts can resolve quickly, while non-engagement, disputes, insolvency concerns or legal escalation extend the process. Rezolva focuses on meaningful progress and keeps the current position visible rather than promising an outcome by a date that cannot be guaranteed.
Are there debts Rezolva will not accept?
Rezolva focuses on commercial business-to-business debts and does not accept consumer debts through the commercial service. Accounts below £500 or debts more than 24 months old are normally reviewed individually, particularly where a portfolio, strong acknowledgment or other circumstances may affect suitability.
Can Rezolva handle a disputed debt?
A dispute does not automatically prevent recovery, but it must be understood. Provide the debtor's stated reasons and the documents supporting your position. Rezolva can seek clarification and engagement, but a material legal dispute may require specialist legal advice before further action.
Will debt recovery damage the customer relationship?
Professional recovery should protect viable commercial value wherever possible. Rezolva uses clear, respectful communication and seeks to understand what is preventing payment. No approach can guarantee that a relationship will be preserved, but the tone and strategy should reflect the account rather than rely on unnecessary confrontation.
How commercial debt recovery charges work
Rezolva explains the agreed fee basis before recovery starts and keeps separately authorised legal or third-party expenditure distinct from amicable collection commission.
What does no collection, no commission mean?
Rezolva's amicable commercial recovery service is success-based under the agreed terms. If the instruction does not produce a recovery, collection commission is not charged. Court fees, solicitor charges and approved third-party expenditure are separate where they are authorised. Read the no collection, no commission guide.
What is Rezolva's standard UK recovery commission?
Rezolva's standard UK commercial debt recovery commission is 12% of money recovered, subject to the agreed service terms. International instructions are normally charged at 15% when managed through the UK office, while local agent, translation, tracing or legal fees may vary.
Does Rezolva add late-payment interest and recovery costs?
Rezolva Connect adds late-payment interest and recovery costs during placement of a commercial account under the basis selected and confirmed by the client. This may be a contractual basis or the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 and applicable Late Payment of Commercial Debts Regulations 2013. The contract, parties and transaction can affect legal recoverability, so entitlement should not be overstated.
Who receives interest recovered from the debtor?
The client receives any late-payment interest successfully recovered together with the recovered principal. Recovered collection costs are applied against Rezolva's agreed commission.
Can recovered collection costs cover the client's commission?
Yes, in net terms, where the collection costs recovered from the debtor are sufficient to cover Rezolva's agreed commission. If only part of the costs is recovered, that amount reduces the commission cost to the client. Recovery of principal, interest or costs cannot be guaranteed.
What if the debtor pays the client directly after placement?
Tell Rezolva immediately so the account balance and recovery record can be updated. A direct payment made after instruction is dealt with under the agreed service terms because it is connected with the instructed recovery activity.
Does Rezolva recover consumer debts?
No. Rezolva's service is for business-to-business debts. Consumer debts and regulated consumer credit or consumer hire matters require different regulatory processes and should not be placed through the commercial recovery service.
Escalation when commercial recovery is not enough
Legal action is one possible stage, not the automatic starting point. The evidence, defence risk, debtor position, value and likely cost all matter.
What is the difference between a Final Demand and a Letter Before Action?
A Final Demand is a firm commercial recovery notice and can form part of the amicable collection process. A Letter Before Action is formal pre-action correspondence explaining the claim, the amount sought, the response required and the possible court step. It should reflect the relevant pre-action requirements and circumstances. Use the Letter Before Action guide for more detail.
Does Rezolva issue court proceedings automatically?
No. Commercial recovery and legal escalation are separate decisions. Rezolva explains the available route, likely upfront cost and relevant risk. No formal legal step is taken without client authority, and litigation is conducted through appropriately authorised legal partners.
Do I always need to go to court to recover a debt?
No. Many accounts resolve through commercial engagement, a Final Demand, a Letter Before Action, payment terms or an agreed settlement. Court proceedings are considered when earlier recovery has not worked and the evidence, value, defence risk, debtor position and likely cost support that route.
How much does a business debt claim cost?
The initial cost can include Letter Before Action work, case preparation, a solicitor's issue fee and the applicable court issue fee. Defence work, hearings and enforcement are normally additional. Use the debt recovery legal costs calculator for an initial estimate.
What happens if a court judgment is not paid?
A judgment does not collect the money by itself. Possible enforcement routes include a warrant or writ of control, a charging order, a third-party debt order or an order requiring information about the debtor's means. The best route depends on the debtor and assets, involves further cost and should be assessed before authority is given.
Can Rezolva recover an international business debt?
Yes. The practical route depends on the contract, governing law, jurisdiction, debtor country, evidence, language and location of assets. Rezolva can coordinate professional engagement and relevant local support. See international debt recovery.
Can Rezolva work with credit-insured debts?
Yes, where the policyholder, broker, insurer or other relevant party authorises the work. Early recovery can be used before a claim where appropriate, but the policyholder must still meet the policy notification and claims requirements. Learn about credit insurance debt recovery partnerships.
Can an old commercial debt still be recovered?
Possibly. Age affects evidence, debtor circumstances, limitation and practical recoverability. Do not assume that an old balance is either automatically recoverable or automatically lost. Obtain case-specific legal advice where limitation may be relevant and act promptly rather than allowing further delay.
What if the debtor appears insolvent?
Stop and assess the position before incurring unnecessary cost. Check the legal status, insolvency notices, asset position, security and whether a proof of debt or another insolvency process is appropriate. Ordinary collection or court action may not be the right route once formal insolvency has begun.
